I was going southbound on Lake Ave. in Pasadena when this Mustang GT pulled up and started revving. We stopped at California/Lake intersection, I decided to vent a little and wanted to see what happens 0-45MPH. Took off when the light turned green, and right when the first gear hit close to 9K I started to shift, but for some reason my left foot felt glued onto the clutch and won't let go, and as I shifted I cringed without knowing why until the 2nd gear was engaged and the clutch pedal fully let go. By this time the Mustang was already pulling away at 55+ and I was slowing down. After some reflection I realized that I was afraid of the 2nd gear grind happening again. The TSB was done, but occassionally I would still get the 1-2 grind. Anyone else hesitate during 1-2 gear shift because of this "fear"? I rarely go into VTEC in first gear anymore, probably due to the same fear.

mingster,

I know exactly what you mean. I had the 1st to 2nd gear TSB done also...but I find that if I try to shift too quickly...it will still grind. Let me rephrase that...I find that if I try to slam on the clutch and pull down on the stick to 2nd at the same time really quick...it will grind. It happened to me last week when I was drag racing Lips2000...maybe it's my driving...

I'm in the process of doing a little experiment. Nowdays I try to pause a split second after slamming on the clutch before shifting into second @ 9000 rpm's. If it still grinds...I'm bringing the bitch back. Haven't had it happen to me yet. I remember before I had the 1st to 2nd gear TSB...2nd would grind even if the clutch was all the way down.

I recommend you to do the same experiment. Let us know what happens!

If you start with a good transmission and mess up the shifts a few times because of driver error, it will probably start to grind later.

I certainly have the 2nd gear grind fever as well. It only seems to occur at or above 7000 from first to second gear on my 2001. 2nd thru 6th are rifle bolt quick even if the cluth not pinned to the floor. When I shift from 1st to 2nd at 7000rpm (or higer) Im countin' freagin' Missippi's when I shift, to make darn sure I dont grind. The red rocket is at 4100 miles and going for scheduled service next week. Im very interested to see if there are any metal shavings/residue in the diff fluid when it is replaced. I've driven many performance cars....many to thier limits and have never experienced this.
