2nd-Time Owner: Is Theft Still an Issue?
I owned an AP2 around 5-6 years ago. I jumped ship for more power and switched to a few different Corvettes, an Elise, and M3s, but I've never found anything that I enjoyed as much as the S2000 due to combination of reliability, driving feel, and practicality. I also hate investing in depreciating vehicles and the S2000's market value has been solid.
So, I'm picking up another AP2 that is very similar to my previous model. It's not a flawless example, but it's something that I can enjoy driving or even using as a daily.
How bad is the theft of these vehicles in 2015? In 2009-2010, the seats were very popular due to their use in other Hondas. The Honda modding scene does not seem to be as big as it was back then. Also, S2000 seats on Ebay are cheap now. Is it still a major risk to leave an S2000 parked somewhere? I plan to have full-coverage, but it will also sit in an apartment parking lot.
Thanks

In the grand scheme of things anything can be stolen given the right amount of work and motivation nothing can prevent it completely. Statistics can say what they want but the best area's in town can have a vehicle burglary tomorrow. Just make smart decisions to lessen the chance.

You can do several things.
Parking. You will zip into your apt complex tired and wanting to get inside. You may go for the easy parking spot which happens to be an easy spot for towing. Don't forget someone is going to notice the car over time.
You can lock the wheels. Physically to hinder towing.
You can have a kill switch.
You can have a GPS/Notification movement alert that will let you know its moving and where it is. Features vary by brand and county coverage.
You can install locking seat bolts and advertise that fact with discreet decals to hopefully head the attack crew off at the pass.

has anyone ever left a bait car out to catch the thieves in the act? i think that would be a fun way to spend a friday night.
You want to keep your car from being stolen, keep it in a private garage like I do. You can always pull the fuel pump fuse but that gets annoying and it could still be towed away.
i always feel the rage when people talk about their cars getting stolen so i'm going to stop now.

I thought there were quite a few hot spots around, like Miami, Orlando, and Houston ?, possibly others.
I haven't seen any S2000's stolen in our area, but I am seeing full sized pick-up trucks being dragged out of parking spaces and pulled away quite quickly (likely using a tow truck), it's like a 2 minute event and next to impossible to prevent. Make sure you have good insurance.
