Exclamation 3rd Gear VTEC! Another Q :)

So when my s2k hits VTEC in 3rd why doesn't it feel or pull as much as 1st or 2nd?
I mean in 1st and 2nd you can hear the noise change and def feel a bump!

In response to my last thread on freeway racing I decided to try it out at 3rd alot today. 6k is exactly around 63-66mph.
So again I tried hitting it at 3rd gear exactly at 6krpms and the accleration at first isn't anything special(probably why I'm always tied or barely pulling against other cars for a second while I'm at 6k starting VTEC)no crazy noise change really all I heard was my exhaust and deep groan of intake, you can't feel the accleration really as the early gears but as VTEC goes up 7.5krpms the speedo goes to high 70s and low 80s and you can def feel going faster.

So basically....When accelerating from 2nd to third the change is not as noticable as hitting VTEC in 1st and 2nd. Any reason why? I mean I can put in to second at 6k and it still pulls like crazy but third is like blah until it gets higher up VTEC.

I'm guessing gears would change this but this isn't bothering me I just would like to know more about the s2k and its weak points etc which def seems to be 3rd gear right at 6krpms which is when I always start out at freeway races cause I don't want to shift to 2nd at 50-65mph!!

Interesting note though, it was pretty hot 82 or so and I was driving on the freeway for about an hour just cruising and got to an exit and I still got the 1st and 2nd VTEC crazy power feeling upon hitting VTEC. I was assuming there would def be some power loss with all that heat and I wouldn't be able to feel VTEC that much but the custom intake stuff def helps

It's simply a matter of mechanical advantage--at lower gears, you have a much larger mechanical advantage (that's why lower gears exist), so that an increase in power is more noticeable. If you take careful note, you will see that there actually is a distinct dropoff in the "dramatic" effect from VTEC in first and VTEC in second, more dropoff into third, more into fourth, and more into fifth, just like it takes much longer to go from 3000 rpm to 8000 rpm in third than in second, etc.

On the track, in my '04, I go from redline in second to just below VTEC in third, and I certainly notice when VTEC hits in third. There's less effect, but still a nice extra nudge, when hitting VTEC in fourth, and even noticeable in fifth. I haven't yet experienced VTEC in sixth.

Hope this helps.

someone already explained it, mechanical advantage in the lower gears.

Heck, on an '04, you hit VTEC in fifth as soon as you shift into fifth after redlining fourth, at onlyh 100mph or so. Now, VTEC in sixth takes more skill than I've yet mustered; so far I've only just managed to hit the rev limiter in fifth--about 126mph.

That's what's so cool about driving on the track--you can learn how to do that legally and safely, and do it till your heart's content
