to be honest, i love the combination of the sound of the gears and my invidia.

and again some get even less gear whine than me, or in different mph spectrums. all depends on the install.

Yes, however, I'm not sure that anyone has actually put them in an S2000. A local owner here has a set of Kia 4.77s sitting on his desk. He has had them cryo-treated but has just not had the time to put them in. We measured their dimensions comparing to my stock 4.10 gear-set. They are nearly identical, with only differences being what having different teeth count makes. Once he puts them in and tests it out, I'm sure he'll post all about it.

Moving to S2000talk.

The 4.57 gearset is made by richmond. a large part of "why" they whine, is they are made of a harder material. even if installed perfectly, you'll get some whine. the way it was explained to me was since the metal is not as soft as stock or the 4.77 for example, a bit of resonation occurs from the movement of the ring and pinion gear meshing together.

I have them and the whine is perfectly bearable for me, and my girlfriend never complains either. it's also softer at certain speeds, and non-existent above 75mph or below 35mph.

the 4.77 is a kia gear that happens to fit our cars, but is made for a 170hp kia spectra. IMO, not what I want to put into my 240hp S2000.

The 4.44 gears are made for the miata, but the world supply of them is pretty much depleted.
You've mentioned this point before, implying that the gear (who happens to made by the same manufactures as the gear for the Kia) is weak and prone to break. The fact is there hasn't been one NA 4.77 gear that failed. There may have been a problem with installation, but there hasn't been a problem directly attributable to the gear. You sound as thought the gear is weaker than stock, but its not. The gear is used in other vehicles besides the Specta.
Are the 4.57 gears stronger...sure. Do you need that extra strength for NA car? doubt it. The 4.77 are just fine. I've had mine for over a year and have had no problems.

Hopefully someone getting gears would be smart enough to cryo treat them..point#1. Second, if someone is going FI, then 4.77 is shaky (at best) and I agree the 4.57 are the better option. However, regarding failures with the 4.77, there have been failures will ALL gears and its usually do to bad installation. There isn't one instance, to my knowledge, where the gear itself has been the problem. As far as driving hard, I drive the hell out of my car and clutch drop (not frequent, but I do) and again, have not had a problem. Also, Italian Buckwheat drags his car all the time (he has NOS and gears) and hasn't had a problem.

Sure, I'll agree there. I guess I wanted folks to have a balanced viewpoint.
Have a good one...
