Most people will tell you 4.57 because that's what most people get. They are both good sets, but I drove around a 4.57 car for 8 days (a friend in my local club... while we were waiting on half shaft/drive shaft bolts for mine when the 4.77 were going in) and I just didn't get the feel I was looking for.
4.57 gears gave me a "oh, yeah I think I can feel the difference" versus the "wow, this is pretty damn cool" that I got with my 4.77 gears. I wanted to get a huge grin on my face with my 1300 dollar investment and the 4.57 just didn't give me that... I was happy with the choice I made.
4.77 are awesome for the typical low gear city street encounters. You'll find yourself in another class altogether with cars you couldn't hang with before.

The SC's are only running at WOT. They have next to zero impact on your daily drive. However, being up to 20% more agressive with your gearing will have a huge impact.

I have never driven a 4.77 geared S before.
But IMO I can tell you that the 4.57R is perfect for street driving. The car noticebly accelerates quicker on either streets or highways. That's exactly what I was looking for when investing in these. I no longer get that low end "no power" feel that I felt with the stock gears. No more lagging or bogging in low gears. Your rpm will climb up quicker.
I also get a slight whine mostly on 5th and 6th (about 60mph). I like the whine. It sounds like a low tone whistle.

You can give your opinion on one but you have to try BOTH if you're going to say which is BETTER in your opinion.
A 4.77 will easily walk the 4.57 in the lower gears used in the city. Up top there isn't much of a difference though

I have yet to hear anyone be disappointed with 4.77 gears. Numerous have been a bit let down with the others. You will know you have changed the gears without question with the 4.77s.
It terms of strength, I don't think its the gear that's the issue. Its the differential itself. So, if you think you are being safer by only changing to a stronger gear, you may be mistaken.
Reading the streat encounters section on this board, and seeing some of the matchups (350z, R32, RSX, accord V6, TL, Altima, Z4) These cars are a complete joke for me at this point if they are stock. While others are talking about neck and neck, losing to R32, Accord V6 is fast, altimas are pretty competative?
I think either gear will put you well ahead of the above cars, I know the 4.77's will and so that is what I can comment about.

[QUOTE=afwfjustin,Jun 27 2006, 10:47 AM] That's like saying you've never slept with a woman but you can tell us that sleeping with men is perfect.

It's really difficult to decide without driving each gearset. See if there is anyone local to you that can let you take the car out. Looking at the gearing charts I thought that I would hate the 4.77's, until I drove them and found out that the difference in highway rpm was not as dramatic as expected.
You'll be happy with both sets, but try to drive each before you decide.
