5 th gear problem
I'm having my '01 taken in tommorrow for a problem that just occured two days ago. I can't shift into 5th gear anymore and 6th gear is getting harder to get into, it's much more notchy and when in neutral i push the knob to the left as if i was about to shift into 1st or second and the knob just stays there instead of returning the the middle neutral position is it the clutch, gear box, etc?
Possibly the centering spring has popped off and may be jamming the right part of the gear pattern. I'm just guessing. I'm not sure where this might be located so may be simply working inside the console under the shift lever.
I could see why you might say that but would that make moving the stick to the right side while in neutral stick to the right side also? cause once the knob move the left in neutral, it sticks but when moved to the right, it returns to the center.... thanks for the suggestion though....any others also?
Somebody else might be able to give a more technical explanation but ....... synchros = synchromesh. Each gear (except maybe reverse) has one to help it mesh better when going from gear to gear since your rear wheel speed may not be the same as the engine speed in the next gear you select. This prevents grinding and eliminates the need to "double clutch". A more vivid indication of bad synchros would be severe gear grinding. It may or may not be the cause of why your tranny has a tough time going into 5th and 6th. The fact that when you push the gear shift lever to the left and it stays there tells me that the return spring is not doing what it's supposed to. It is a different spring action that's makes the stick come back from the right. To confirm bayarea's point about the synchros, try to double clutch into 5th and 6th. If you can get into gear this way, he may be right. In either case, I think you are looking at a tranny removal.
Hope I'm wrong.
