Default 6-figure S2000

Surprised this hasn't been mentioned yet, so I'll go ahead: the third-to-last U.S. S2000 ever made, MY09 Berlina Black CR VIN #0355 (CR #697 out of 699), just sold on BaT for $112K+fees (total of $117K).
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/20...da-s2000-cr-5/

This car was certainly special, in that it was A) a CR, B) just 985 miles on the odo, C) in excellent condition, and D) one of the very last ever built (for the U.S. anyway). It also included the original window sticker which identified it as a "CVA" vehicle -- that is, reserved from new for ownership by American Honda. (CVA cars are used for press fleets, technician training, "company cars" for employees, VIP/marketing events, etc. -- rationally speaking, CVA cars are still just used cars, but sometimes they're considered more interesting/desirable due to the corporate history.)

Anyway, those things considered, it was certainly going to "bring the money"...but I admit $117K out the door was a surprise even to me.

The auction was well-attended, generating over 500 comments (including, yes, a few from me).

What do you think? Pandemic "bubble"? Ultra-special "unicorn" price? Or is this a real indicator of the S2000 market getting super hot? (I know what I think, but I'll wait till later to say...)

This car is a museum piece, at least I hope the owner keeps it that way. Otherwise, this one was more $$$$$ than a gated-shifter 360. Or a brand new GT4.

Already a thread on it...

Don’t think it has anything to do with the pandemic. S2000 market has been strong for several years now.

The supply is running low. This is what starts to happen to cars that are iconic. The S2k is iconic. My guess is that it will see saw up and down with the curve generally moving upwards for unmolested examples.

Maybe my old MY 02 would have been a better investment than I thought when I sold it. The interesting question to me is how the run of the mill unmolested average miles S2k will fare value wise in the coming years.

Download all the pictures from that auction, and you'll get to experience the same thing as the person who bought this car, as they will never do anything other than look at it!

For $100k less!

Wow -
Not all that surprising. Agreed it's a museum piece...
Values are going up and will continue to do so. We're seeing values climbing in driven cars too which is pretty cool to see. Just shows how special these cars are.

Mileage wise? it will not make that much difference with Honda manufacturing new components for the "restoration market". The key will be stock and non wrecked vehicles with matching numbers. Modified or highly "personalized", damaged, riced and ruined S2000's will be worthless.
I can’t wait for the bottom to fall out of 90’s car values like they did for muscle cars (albeit much more quickly).

Bought both of my 05's about 6 months ago or so. Didn't even know about the appreciation till after the 2nd one was bought. Then in 2-3 weeks, pretty much every single youtube auto channel rated it one of the top appreciating cars in the market today. It was estimated at 4% appreciation annually as of now, but im sure after that CR was bought, we might be on our way to a nice investment. Even though I am just starting my S2K journey, I wouldn't mind picking up another rough one to restore. Granted, im no where near that level of repair work but through my modded S2K, I'm learning something new everyday.

Today of which I'm learning all about VTEC Solenoid leaking (Yay!... not) also learned about a Ballade TCT that seems to be recently installed when she first got a tune up. I didn't know that, which I'm not too happy about. Ballade has terrible terrible rep everywhere I go, I don't know how to feel about it. Wouldn't be surprised if that is the cause of the oil leak I am currently seeing. Any thoughts? By the end of this build, I might as well get a 3rd & 4th S2K. Plenty of rough ones out there belonging to many who can't properly maintenance them.

I was surprised to see that price as well. It is however, a testament to the S2000's place in the automotive world. It was a fairly rare car when it was being sold and is even rarer now especially if it is in good condition.
