About to buy a used 2001S2k
Hi everyone,
I am about to get a 2001 s2k with about 24k miles. Is there anything that I need to watch out for. I've done some research and know that the canvas on the convertible may crack and stuff... but is there any other big thing I need to watch out for? Thanks so much for everyone's help!
Oh... please let me know your thoughts on this deal:
2001 silverstone s2k
24k miles
Options:
Hardtop
OEM front lip
Side Strakes
Rear spoiler
$20k... good deal? Clean accident history
I think that's it.

2001s are prone to the "clutch buzz" which is a vibration of the clutch on deceleration. It is NOT a problem, just an annoyance. The clutch will not break from this. the fix is a new clutch disc.
My MY01 had it and I lived with it. Most MY01s develop the problem.
Watch for:
make sure all body panels have a green vin sticker...doors, fenders, hood, trunk, bumpers, and rear quarters (their sticker is in the door jamb).
Make sure the tranny shifts with no grinding. It may be notchy when cold, but it smooths out
Make sure there are no clicks in the rear diff and no whining from the hubs.
Check the rear for folds and stuff. The tops on the 00-01 are prone to a 1cm tear behind the top of the driver window.
btw, the top is NOT canvas, it is vinyl. This is the first i have heard of cracking...and I've been here a good while.
20K with a hardtop is a good deal. You can sell the hardtop if you dont' want it for almost $2K.

Anyway, yes... very good deal. You're basically paying $18k for the car, since the top can be sold for a cool 2g's.

it has always been vinyl. they never used canvas. it is a vinyl cloth which is often mistaken for canvas.
Thanks for all the info.... how can I hear the rear differential thing? should I buy an extended warranty from a third party dealer?
You'd hear a knocking sound coming from the rear in harder turns when you apply power.
sometimes, you'll hear a click or two when starting to move. this is usually simply the wheel hub nut being loose or a dirty hub/wheel joint.

When I think Vinyl, I think of the top on my old 94 Miata. It felt like a thick black trash bag.
I wonder why they didn't use real canvas on the S... cost savings?
