Default AC service

With 4 days left on my factory warranty I wanted to make sure my AC was ok before expiration. The AC was blowing intermittant hot and cold. I was informed by the SM that if anything was wrong it would be taken care of under warranty but if it were just low on coolant, it would be treated as a routine service check and would cost $89. I was kind of expecting a free service here but did agree to these terms before the service. It did turn out the the coolant was low but they could detect zero leaks so I had to pay the $89 dollars.
I have no complaint if this is legitimate. What is the majority opinion on this deal?

Gee I didn't think the stuff could just evaporate..., It must have gone somewhere but I'm no AC expert.

I would throw a fit if I paid someone $89 to check and refill my coolant.

It's a closed system, how can refrigerant go anywhere if there isn't a leak? I have a MY04 with 38K miles and it never needed a "refill" under heavy usage in tropical heat.

My guess is you have a pinhole leak in the system.

My car went into service March 2002. a/c works quite well here in South Carolina, and has never needed servicing. Your mileage may vary.

My same question / The SM says they did a dye test and could detect zero leaks. If this is true, it must have left the dealer only partially filled when I bought the car.
