i plan on tracking the car once every 3 months and the rest will jsut be cruising a little on the weekends. a new engine would be about 4-5k i figured for 20-40k miles.

its a little over priced maybe if it came with a hard top i can maybe justify $10k for it but it has 171k miles thats a lot, i think anywhere between $6-7.5k is a fair price. thats my opinion. i know you can get ap1's with 100k for $10k

thanks dude, i might be able to get an engine swap for about 2-3k. figuring this might be a good deal if i can get it for like 8k and just beat on the engine on the track and swap it once its dead.

I wouldn't. I just picked up an '02 S2k for 9.7k from the dealership, including tax, title, dealer fees, etc... Was in excellent shape; nearly brand new top w/ glass window, brand new tires, paint was in GREAT shape for a 10 year old car, and it only had 98k miles on it.

bought mine a couple months ago. seems like a good comparision.
2002 181k motor was repalced at 90k
everything on the car was perfect and nothing has gone wrong.
had advans lowering springs
all jl speakers and nice cd player
new top and new windsheild
had oem lip and strakes
nice custom exhaust(not much drone at all)

I picked it up for $8,400.
not one scrach or dent. only thing it had was a tiny crack in the plasic lip.

I would look around a little more if I was you. If you know you want a S. Find like 3-5 that you would buy and pick the best one.

I think the 8k mark is fair assuming that the top is in mint condition and the interior (especially the drivers seat) doesn't show signs of extreme wear. Also check things like the tires and any other maintenance items that may need to be replaced right away. There are plenty of people on here with cars in the 100k+ mile range and they run fine. Its really not a good deal if you have to swap the engine right away. If the engine thats in there is still strong its not bad.
