Default Advice- Replace 2 or 4 Tires

I need to replace the rear tires: however, the front are still in good shape. Are there any performance issues for not replacing the front??

Any advice is appreciated.

You just have to be careful about brand matching and some real brand incompatibility. I have the high-zoot Michelin Pilot Sports, 18 inchers no less, and I used up my rears in about 13k miles. I went to Discount Tire and one of the jamokes their recommended an inexpensive substitute for the rear. Well, I barely made it home with the mismatched brands, which I don't recall the brand we tried on the back, but my S2k was real squirrelly and very unsafe. At any rate, with these specific tread designs on the high-end tires, many times they simply cannot not be mixed with another brand. I put a new set of Pilot Sports on the rear with leaving the Pilot Sports I had on the front and my handling came back and everything is fine.

Be careful where you go. Some of these guys in the tire shops may be inexperienced with the high performance tires and may not be aware of the limitations involved. So, replacing two is okay, just make sure they are compatible.

Hope this helps.

How many miles did you get out of your rears? My back tires are pretty well gone after 19,000 miles, but the fronts look OK.

Typically, your fronts will last about twice as long, maybe a little less, than the rears will last.

There is no trouble with changing out just the fronts or just the rears. Only, as was stated here, if you change manufacturer should change all 4 at a time.

Speed 2000, how on God's green earth can you get 19k out of these rears?! I'm getting my 4th set of tires and I have about 30k!

The answer is, "It depends." The rule is don't mix types and brands. That doesn't mean it won't ever work, it just means that this is the safest course.

Remember, our car comes with mismatched sizes, tread patterns and (I believe but can't prove) compounds. They are nominally the same brand and type.

Some tires will mix well and some won't. I'm sure we can make some suggestions that may work for you. For me, AVS Sports in 245/45 work quite well with the stock fronts.

BTW, you could just buy new backs, try them, and only replace the fronts if it seemed warranted. It's unlikely that any combination you pick would make the car to unsafe to try out.

12k miles & still reasonable tread left. I just don't want to get caught in a hard rain and start sliding..................

I got almost 13k out of my first rear set of S-02's. My fronts are still ok at 17k. I dont push my car too much, but the car has been tracked on the new set of tires so i am expecting slightly less life this time around.

I'm just planning on getting S02's all around the next change as I KNOW those work well for me.

You WILL notice when the tread compound starts to change on you BEFORE the tread actually get to the end of its life. Power slides and 4-wheel drifts will become easier to do, but thats also about the time I felt less confident in the car and felt new tires were warranted.
