Default Advice on service with independent mechanic.

Hi all,

As the title says I have booked the car in for a service with the local mechanic. He has a very good reputation and has always been decent with any other cars I have brought to him (albeit nothing like the S2000.)

The issue is that he is not a Honda specialist (severe lack of any decent ones in Ireland) and so there may be a learning curve with the Vtec engine. I have been in two Honda dealerships and both barely had a clue what an S2000 was, so that did not instil confidence!

Is there anything you guys think I should suggest to him? Tips, or things he might overlook on a RWD Vtec car? I have the service schedule from the FAQ, so anything that is not covered there would be helpful. The car is a MY00 and is at 90k miles.

Thanks in advance.

Depends on what on the car you are having serviced. Alot of it is like any other car and alot of it is not.

Are you looking for a generic / baseline service or something specific?

Pretty much. I want absolute piece of mind that the car is in great working order.. also it has its National Car Test next month. (NCT is an Irish roadworthyness test - emissions, lights, bodywork, safety, noise level etc etc)

This stuff may not be obvious:

Check the retainers/keepers:

Research the oil banjo bolts and have those checked.

Spark plugs are known to back out. Make sure they are torqued properly.

Change all the fluids.
- Coolant has a unique bleeding procedure, make sure he understands it.
- The diff needs some special fluid. Order that and bring it.
- The rest of the fluid changes are straightforward

If you think you have to hold his hand, why are you spending your money there?

Whenever I take the car to a non-specialist, I print out pages of the shop manual for them....
