Default In the Airbox...

So... for the first time I went to go check the air filter to see how clean it was and I noticed that there is this huge a$$ partition between the filter and where the air enters the box... Can we cut that thing out? It looks like it cuts a lot of airflow.

I mean... what is the purpose of it in the first place?

Is there any pros to cutting it out?

Prevents water from getting in.

In addition to preventing water from getting into the intake manifold, I would guess that it allows big pieces of solid material to fall before they get to the air filter. This will allow the air filter stay clean longer and to do what it is supposed to do ... filter small dirt particles from the intake air.

some people gut out. it helps direct air flow to the filter though. can you take a picute of yours and post it up?

I can see the garbage and water... actually I can't even see that cause if people have cold air intakes in front of the right front tire fender... then how is water going to get into an airbox that is enclosed?... I just can't see it.

And I can't also see how it would help airflow since the open space from where the air enters the box to the actual filter is like 75% closed from the partition. I'll try to get a pic, but it's going to be a crappy phone pic. I don't have a digital camera yet... lol.

So would it be bad to just cut it out? It'll probably just improve the sound right?

Actually, if you look at your air box lid, you'll see there's a pipe that directs the air (and water and debris) right to the filter, and not into that small partition. Best guess is that it is for harmonics - the box has a cavity to the right of the filter as well.

If you cut that partition, the car will sound a little more aggressive. Most people who cut the partition also cut off the pipe on the cover. I don't think it does anything for airflow at all, but maybe cutting the partition wall helps increase turbulance and the awesome turbine event that adds 5hp. Well, maybe not, but it sounds good.

Yes it's primarily for sound suppression, that along with the small chamber in the driver side of the air box. You should get a little better throttle response, in theory, by cutting it out and enlarging the air box volume. The S2K is so well tuned though you may not feel it. On my Pilot, the sound suppression chambers snake all around the intake system. Removing those definately made it feel more responsive.

I thought my S2000 was stock (bought it used 4 months ago) until hardtopguy drove it recently and noticed it didn't sound stock. We opened it up and discovered the airbox partition had been removed, and the previous owner had installed a flexible duct to route cold air into the box from the "fake" air scoop on the nose piece. To my untrained ears it doesn't sound much different than the first S2000 I owned, which was also a 2003 model. The inside of the airbox didn't look like it had caused any problem with debris or water getting in.
