Sand and gravel on curves can cause problems on a perfect driving day. This is why on organized drives the group leaders warn the peeps behind about them. Just gotta pay attention and slow down a bit.

so do the tires not work as well in the cold or was it most likely just the sand?

Cold "summer" tires are sufficient in and of themselves to have caused the problem. So is sand, so toss a coin. Even on a warm day, the S02's don't deliver their full traction until they're warmed up, and on a cold day they can be pretty nasty if you're expecting them to give full traction. Sand, especially on concrete, can be nasty too.

If you drive your car moderately, just be careful, and match your tires to the local driving conditions. If you like to push it, attend a good driving school, a few track days, and/or a few autocrosses. This is the wrong car for learning limits on the street.
