Speaking of exhausts, aren't there any out there that aren't obnoxiously large tipped? Sometimes I see these $1000+ exhaust systems and it looks like they welded a Folgers coffee can at the end and for some reason it looks really tacky.

Lots of exhausts don't have tips much larger than standard AP2 tips. It's just hard with a 70mm exhaust NOT to have a large tip. What about J's? They aren't my style, but they don't seem very overstated.

He asked what exhausts don't have bazookas at the end, I responded J's.

I didn't see anyone mention this, but since you have a 2001 you may benefit to going to a 2002 or 2003 ECU. I found one on car-part.com for $150 then had the dealership reprogram it (due to the immobilizer) so that was $120. So for $270 you get a bit better low and mid range power.

The 2002 and 2003 ECUs are tuned less conservatively than the 2000 and 2001 ECUs.

Save a couple bucks and get gears.

You may be getting the idea that there is no way to significantly increase torque in the ap1, and that is pretty much correct. Gears are a good idea for making the most of the torque you have.

I went the intake route and made the unit shown and described in the forum thread on the link below:

https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showt...&#entry10127498

It allows for starting out in first at a lower rpm, and provides noticeably more power in the 4K to 6K rpm range (pre-VTEC), eliminates heat soak, and gives slightly better fuel economy. Cost for all components, including a second stock air box to modify so I could return to stock quickly) was about $300. It has not been on a dyno, so I'm going by feel and a few timed runs between various speeds when I say it improves performance. As you will see, "ram air" plays a role in this mod, and this can't be truely duplicated on a dyno.

I have been reading this thread and something that was written created my question. I have had my car for 5 years and now have about 31K miles on it. I purchased it used, the previous owner installed a K&N filter. I installed a snorkle intake that has been in the car for 5 years and a cooling plate. I also have a 70mm TB and have a 2nd stock intake manifold that is being ported and polished. When I installed the TB I noticed that the TB was fairly clean as well as the intake.

My question is: What type of supposed damage to the MAP or other sensors would be caused by this filter? I don't remeber reading this subject on this subject. I am not questioning the validity of the statement, I just want to know how it damages and what damage it causes.

Some people believe the oil from the K&N filter will clog up the map sensor and make it fail. If this were true the all our map sensors would fail because we suck in a little bit of oil from the valve cover all the time and that would cause a failure faster. I think this myth was started because the oil from the filter can build up over time on a MAF sensors heated element and cause it not to register properly thereby screwing up a $600 sensor. But since our cars do not have a MAF sensor, there is nothing to worry about.

VAFC and tune? Wouldn't that run a little less than or right around $500?

I think it's safe to say you won't get much out of this car for $500. You can't even get a decent set of rims without going over a grand.
