Anybody else use car covers?
I get these stupid looks when I pull into work and install my car cover before heading inside. Where I used to live, (Alabama) heat and sun were an issue in the summer, and car cover use was often seen. But here in Michigan, these people think I must be nuts! I'll admit I'm a bit anal about my stook (and my other toys), but frankly, I'm tired of telling people the reason why I cover it

It is my opinion, and it's probably fact, just can't quote the source, that UV rays are far more harmful to the painted surfaces of any car than most people think. Use lots of a wax/polish that provides serious UV protection and make sure that if your car stays out in the sun all day that it is covered by a UV rated car cover.
Screw those people...it's your car. Who cares what they think...

I'm with you. Unless I'm going to be parked for less than an hour, I cover it. I bought one of the better covers - it's suppose to stop UV and it does stop water. On a bright day the surface of the car is still hot from the sun. I understand this has nothing to do with damaging UV. I also notice that on windy days dust will get under the cover. The inside of the cover is soft but I do wonder if that dust between the cover and the paint is going to mar the surface in time. So far, the "S" still looks great - I keep a good coat of wax on it. Every week or two I spray the cover off with water while it is on the car and let it dry. It's been 2 months and the cover still looks new. I'm sold on covers. I think they are the next best thing to a garage.
As one of the more anal people on the board I will say that I NEVER use a cover on the car unless it is washed. When you drive the car it collects all sorts of stuff on it. When you put the cover on an unwashed car, it scratches the paint with the particles that are on the car.
Also, if the cover is not very tight fitting the wind will make the cover "flap" around and it will also move any particles around that are on the car.
If you keep a good coat of wax on the car it should be fine sitting out all day. I do try to park in the shade whenever possible.

I've got the Honda car cover, and I use it religiously. Since my office doesn't have covered parking, I'm forced to leave it in the sun all day, and here in Texas in summer, that's a Bad Thing.
BTW, the cover works perfectly, regardless of whether the top's up or down

A brush off with the California duster is a must before putting the cover on. I've been doing mine this way since November and there are no scratches of any kind. You want to see people stare? Just pull out that duster and go to work!

I've used covers for years, buying only the best I can. I like California Car Covers (shameless plug) for their quality and fit. My cars are waxed monthly and the cover is not used if I have driven thru a rain storm recently. I agree on the road grime issue, so if the car is clean, before I cover it I use my Calif. duster. Primarily on the f/r bumpers.
