I'm not sure why I'm helping my local dealer, other than the fact that I feel sorry for the car in their show room. From Long Beach or San Diego I've seen Southwest Airlines flights to El Paso for less than a hundred $. It's about 2 hour's drive north to Alamogordo, NM, and $39 for the shuttle. The dealer has a white/red for sticker, or if you talk to Randy Alfaro maybe a better deal. I forget the mileage (for the drive back to CA), but it's a 11-13 hour drive back to Riverside (I've made the trip a few times). So, for a couple day's of your time, to get here/drive home, plus expenses (flight, shuttle, motel (?), and gas), it may beat buying in So Cal. The drive is pretty boring, though, and really HOT--but the air in the S2K works pretty well. Maybe not something your friend wants to do, but an option. Call Randy if it sounds interesting (800-748-1123)

To make it easier, call Richard Enos at Norm Reeves Honda in Cerritos, or Anthony Armijo at Metro Honda in Montclair. Both within a hour's drive of LA, and should be able to quote you MSRP right over the phone.

PS - Don't talk to anyone else other than those guys mentioned above, as you might not get quoted MSRP. If you call Anthony, tell him Albert referred you.

After much research I found that LA/Orange County had good prices better than Bay Area or San Diego. I got mine in OC for MSRP one month ago.

A member recently bought his S2K for $500 under MSRP in San Francisco.

His technique was to get close to invoice email price quotes from dealers in Chicago and Boston. He then printed all of them and took it to his local dealer. He told the dealer that if you don't offer a good deal he would simply buy one in another state and ship it over. The dealer relented and sold it for $500 under.

I'm sure that you could use the same technique successfully in LA.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.

I live in San Diego picked up a new 2002 (Silver/Black) for $1000- under MSRP from the Honda dealer in El Centro in April. The car had no forced extras and was the color combination that I was looking for. Also, they guys out there were so straight compared with guys nearer the beach....it was all so painless, with no BS.

At the time I was shopping around the next best bet seemed to be Norm Reeves in Temecula, who were also at MSRP (and get a lot more S2000s than the El Centro dealer), but they were not prepared to deal without adding several thousand dollars of forced extras. I also visted several other dealers in San Diego and got calls back from several of them, even after I had told them that I would not pay a penny over MSRP. Personally, I got the impression that they are all prepared to sell at MSRP, it's just a matter of holding tight and playing hardball with them.

Incidentally, I found out about my car from a member on this board who posted a note back in April saying he has seen the car at the El Centro dealership, stickered at MSRP. Thanks again Mallory...!

After spending several weeks reading comments on this board I went into the purchase being very confident about all aspects of my decision. This is a great board.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed and made my purchase so much easier.

Dang, CA_Brit, I got my car for MSRP at Fuller Ford/Honda down by the border off the 805.

I had called a place in El Centro, they said they didn't have any and weren't getting any. This was around 8/20/01.

I grew up in El Centro.

I have a few questions for Southern California S2k drivers....does anyone know of a good (offensive) driving school around here? I've heard Bondurrant in Arizona is good - they trained the Gone in 60 Seconds actors there), but real expensive.

I'd like to get some spinout control, cornering, etc skills before looking into autocrossing.

Also, can anyone recommend a good and affordable body shop?
