I think the instruction manual says that you havta turn the cap until it clicks 3 or more times... otherwise, the check engine light might come on. Not sure if this is the problem or not, but worth a shot.

This seems to be a bigger problem than I first thought. Is there an aftermarket gas cap that will work for us? I'll call my Honda dealer tomorrow.

the check engine light will come on in a couple of cars if the gas cap is not on tight. i've heard this many times at various dealerships. never happened to me, so i can't verify that it is true in the real world. i have an 02 and i haven't experienced it. how about just ask them for a new one? worth a try....at least they won't have to continue using hours of their tech's time trying to figure it out.

by the way, how do you reset the computer? my CEL light came on b/c i passed the 7,500mile service (i changed my own oil and it's annoying me...haha)

THANKS ALL!

That is really strange! I don't have any idea of what could cause that, but I am interested to find out what it is when you solve your mystery.

My oil cap says I should use "SJ" oil, but the owner's manual says use "SL".

I'm so confused, I don't have time to think about the gas cap

You know this is a very interesting thread. Awhile back I posted due to the MIL (same as the CEL) coming on. Someone mentioned check the cap...lo and behold it was loose. Now I read the manual and the gas cap so I know that the MIL will come on if not tightened properly, so when I fill up I make a point of tightening it past 3 clicks. So I put this occasion to being just an oversight on my part, reset the ECU and the MIL did not come back. I was extra vigilant on this so it would not happen and you know what...it happened again a few weeks later. I am going to really keep my eye on this now.
