Piston speed is a more critical design factor than rpm. I remember reading in road and track that the s2k piston speed at redline is beyond f1 specs (or something like that). Anyone have the data?

No data, but remember that an F1 has .3L cylinders whilst the S2000 has .5L cylinders, and that the F1 engines are most likely "squarer" than the F20C.

The result is that although they spin twice as fast the pistons travel half as much on a single stroke.

My calculations give me 81 ft/sec. I think that's about on par with the new M3.

I'm not going to calculate it for you, but how hard can it be?

Piston speed/min = (stroke * 2) * RPM

Nope it's 80.71 ft./sec. or 4842.52 ft./min. or 6.46 in./revolution or 58110.24 in. @ 9000rpm or 0-60-0 mph in 1/150th of sec.

Isn't that just average speed, not peak?

V_max is about 126.78 ft/sec with an 82 mm stroke at 942.478 rad/sec (9000 rpm).

Given that that is the correct VMax, it works out to ~86.5mph.
