Default AP1 faster than AP2?

My friend is argumenting with me to buy used MY00 to MY03 bacause of AP1 engine. Is 2.0 better than 2.2 in terms of performance? Is AP1 faster? I have no exterior preference, however I was leaning on leasing the 05 S2K instead of buying used, but performance is the only reason I am buying S2K.

so the question is, are they pretty much the same? or which is faster?

I am sure much of it is up to the driver.

thanks guys, and I hope this topic wasn't somthing that was beat to death( it it is, sorry guys)

AP2 is better performing car, more power across the entire powerband, revised gear box to utilize power band, more rubber on the road, etc etc.

It is argued from AP1 S2000 owners, that the AP1 is a more fun spirited less watered down ride.

Thanks Highrpemek, so I guess my friend's assumption is totally off.

I think I am leaning towards leasing a new one if there is no performance gap between the two

Do you fully understand the consequences of leasing a car? You pay for the car each month, and you get NOTHING back in return at the end of your lease. It's like paying rent on an apartment. At least when you finance a used car, the price over 2-3 years isn't going to drop THAT much, and you'll only be out of a few grand. Leasing a car is even worse an investment than buying a car brand new. The best time to buy a car for money purposes (and when the exponential price curve starts to flatten out) is around 3-4 years old.

Say you have a lease for the next 3 years at 300 a month. 3,600 a year x3 is well over 10,000 dollars just to drive a car for a couple of years. A HORRIBLE investment. A lot of people lease cars because they couldn't otherwise drive a nicer newer car. However, you can get a 3 year old S2000 and be making the SAME payments as your lease, and you'll only lose maybe 3 or 4 thousand after 3 years. Let's say the difference then is 2 thousand extra a year to lease it. Is that really worth it just to have a new car? Hell, the difference over 3 years is the price of a Comptech supercharger + aftercooler

in a straight line, the two cars are about as even as you can get. neither runs faster in the 1/4 mile and neither runs faster 0-60. so from that standpoint it's completely up to the driver.

the only aspect in which the ap2 has some performance advantage is on the road course tracks, where the slightly better midrange torque helps. both the ap1 and ap2 seem to be performing well in A-stock, and from what i've seen, neither seems to have an advantage over the other in auto-x.

in other words, unless you're racing on a road course, they will perform equally. it's simply a driver's race. the road course, again, seems to give the ap2 some slight advantage.

so really, buy whichever one you like better. drive both and decide.

Thanks everyone!

afwfijustin - I thinking of leasing only bacause 3XX a month seem much better than my current payment for the TL. If I finace a new S2K 5 years, I will be right back to the same payment, also i am not 100% sure I will keep it 3+ years, but if I decided to , i will fiance after the lease. keep in mind, its my monthly spending I want to keep down right now.

I saw alot of used S2K's in the market, however it comes with little or no warranty, can i trust that? If fiancing a used car, which comes with higher interest rate, then I must ask myself how reliable is used S2K, prob went through hell of redlining, abused or not I do not know, this is only reason i am thinking of leasing.

again thank you for all the responses, a great help for me.
