Just wondering, was the ap1 designed for only 2 shifts to 60mph purely for marketing the car so it would beat any competitors in the race to 60??

 

I don't think it's a coincidence that second tops out at 63mph at 8900.

I don't know if they did it SOLELY for this purpose, as the gears are perfectly spaced if you ask me. Third is our best gear.

My old 5 Speed Focus would get 60 in 2nd, that was a 'family' hatch

 

It actually tops closer to 66mph.

An important factor in optimizing 0 - 60 is the ability to reach 60 in 2nd gear without winding out. The Honda Civic Si, not super fast in its own right, has a short second gear, and requires a 2 - 3 shift in the haul to 60 mph, which takes well over 6 seconds. We S2000's can do it in second gear, and that obviously is a big help.
