AP1 Tire sizes - OEM or 245s rear?
I recently purchased a 2001 S2000 and it came with 245s in back. I've met up with a few other S2000 owners, and they all seem to have 245s in back. Is this a common upgrade? I know the OEM tire is a 225. I also realize that these cars are tail happy and the bigger rears help reduce that tendency.
That said, I have a friend who is a racer and is pushing me to go back to the OEM size. He is familiar with the amount of time Honda spent developing this car, and the OEM tire size is ideal for the suspension setup of this car. Larger tires, while increasing absolute grip, reduce feel and cause other changes in the handling dynamics. Additionally, oversteer is a great tool in the hands of a talented driver.
I'm not scared of oversteer; I definitely know how to handle these cars, and I regularly get the tail out on this car. It actually seems rather easy, even with 245s. So I'm wondering if it'll be that much easier with 225s, and hence possibly more scary?
Do any of you have opinions on this? Are any of you still running OEM tire sizes? Are you happy with them? Have any of you done both? What are the pros and cons of each tire size? How would you say your driving skill level is suited to the different tire sizes and greater oversteer?
