Scot-
If you'ld like to get a kart race event together I'm sur I can get you a good deal. The track is in Las Vegas. I was involved with karting many years ago and one of my kart efforts was building karts for Bryan Herta. He races for Cart as some may know. Anyway Bryan and another friend, Hollis Brown, have a karting race school in Vegas. If youl'd like me to hook you up with them for an S2K event let me know. I'm sure I can get a discount. Cost to me would be a couple of beers to explain how I got Domino's Pizza at PIR from Monehan....but that's a different story for a different day.

PM me if your interested............

I saw a Kart Track vendor up at Lime Rock Park when I was there for the Porsche festival two weekends ago. The Kart Track was located right near Port Jervis, NJ (where NY, NJ, PA meet)

I can't seem to find it doing an internet search . . . does anyone know what the place/business is called???

TIA

I suggest taking a few laps in a non-race situation before doing any wheel-to-wheel racing. I took a full day kart racing class last year and those little KT100 two stroke single-cylinder karts with one gear and a centrifugal clutch are amazing. With all of 12 - 18 HP they still propelled me over 50 MPH! The open wheels can launch you in collision situations. You should wear some serious protection. The brake can spin you instantly. The near-total lack of suspension beats the heck out of you. If you stall you will NOT be able to start it on-track by yourself.

But it is serious fast fun so go for it!

In your location thingy, you say you're from Alaska; yet you're talking about Long Island and NY??? Where are you located?

If you are in the East Coast area, there are various karting tracks and venues available.

In the Boston Area, http://www.f1boston.com/, it has been set up by a racer.

Call the SCCA, and find out about their karting program.

In Connecticut, call Bones Kart Shop.

I have one of those "5hp" karts. It's set up with no govenor, runs on alcohol, does about 60, has about 9hp, does about 1.5 lateral G's with the today's slick tires (Bridgestones, I might add). And if you buy a new one all tricked out for racing, it'll cost you about $5000. You can rent them for about $175-$250/ day.

Shifter karts, start at $5000 and go to $10,000 and can go about 140mph; but there aren't very many santioning bodys for them, because they are so expensive.

I took Don Swanson's all-day kart racing course here in San Diego (actually, in the hills Northeast of here, at the Amago GoKarting Raceway). We were doing between 50-70 mph on the straights but, because you're so low to the ground, it feels like 150! And, apart from spinning out once, had no trouble with handling--the acceleration of my cart did seem a little sluggish later in the day, perhaps because of the heat (it was 95 deg. in the shade).

I have a KT100 that I usually take to Amago. TFOTA and I spent a great day there last year. If you don't have your own kart, it's a little expensive to rent. It's about $100 for 30 laps. If you've never driven a modern kart, though, 30 laps will definitely wear you out.

I bought the kart from 2Wild kart shop. It was one of their team karts. They put on a fresh engine, tires, body work and seat. I bought all of the other necessities like starter, stand, suit, helmet, gloves, shoes, etc. The whole thing cost under $5k. I had the engine "massaged" by 2Wild to add about 3 hp and it cost only $100 or so.

There are kart tracks in Riverside, Perris, San Diego, Valencia and of course Willow Springs. I believe it's one of the cheapest ways to go racing and get some of the same thrills you might in an open wheel race car.
