best free mod - airbox cover off ?
I heard this quite a few times. What are the pros and cons of driving with airbox cover off ?? I heard that you lose some hp, which i don't quite understand ?? Is it noticeably louder ??
Thanks, guys~
I think the better sound tends to make people think they are gaining some hp on the butt dyno. I don't feel much difference with it on or off. It takes like 2 seconds to take it on or off so if I feel like hearing the wonderful symphony of VTEC I'll take it off then put it back on later. I'm probably going to get a comptech icebox for xmas.
Ah~~ the heat. I see. So it seems like the sound difference is quite noticeable. I will try it today when i leave work.
Can someone please find me the link to the topic that supposedly discussed this to death?? I am new here, and the search is not working for me??? Does it work for you guys ?
Thanks
The search is still kind of wacky since the upgrade of the boards, your best shot at finding the threads is just to look through the first few pages of threads. I've seen it covered a handful of times since I joined in May.

Finally Gutted the Airbox, Results.....
That was 1 of the 2 threads going on regarding this last week and earlier this week. There really are dozens and dozens of threads where this has been debated or discussed (I know I have posted to a number of them over the last year or so).
In a nutshell, it doesn't hurt anything, sounds pretty damn cool, may even help in the winter time but in the summer (at least in places where it's hot and humid) the power loss is quite noticable and not worth it IMO. My airbox cover is off all fall/winter/spring goes back on as soon as it warms up to where I feel the bog.

Here is a technical, if lengthy, view from the Road and Track site, April 2003:
Honda S2000 Torque
The weak point of my 2001 Honda S2000 is, as we all know, the lack of low-rpm torque. All of the high-dollar modifications I've read about primarily add only to this car's already strong pull at high rpm, and do little (if anything) for its weak point. I added a K&N air filter and could detect a little improvement.
As I live in an area where much dust and "trash" blows in the air, I periodically vacuum out the breather boxes on all my cars. Recently, I performed this operation on my S2000, and was distracted and forgot to replace the breather box cover. When I next drove this car (sans breather box cover), I detected a significantly greater pull when accelerating from low rpm. Clearly, the air was being drawn more freely through the filter.
Problem is, my dealer has advised me against driving the car without this cover, but offers no specific reason. Logic tells me that it should do no harm, as the air filter is still in full operation. But logic may not be reliable in the case of these computer-controlled machines. Do you feel there could be any harm in driving this car with the breather box top removed? And in either event, can you suggest any breather box modifications that would lessen this box's intake restriction?

their response:
Hot air is the problem with running without the breather box cover. Given its behind-the-radiator location in the engine compartment, opening the air filter box allows hot underhood air into your S2000's engine. This is immediately detected by the computer, which has been programmed by Honda to aggressively retard the ignition timing when it senses high incoming air temperatures. This is due to the S2000's elevated compression, which runs closer to detonation territory than less highly tuned engines.
To investigate what might be available for the S2000's admittedly feeble low- and midrange torque, we spoke to two Honda tuners, Jackson Racing ([888] 888-4079) and King Motorsports ([262] 593-2800). Both voiced the concern on hot intake air. Both said the perceived performance increase you cite is just the old mind trick of believing more intake noise equals more power. (Both outfits had dynoed this modification; Jackson Racing found "no gain or a slight loss," King Motorsports saw a 3-bhp loss.) Both noted the S2000 is known for weak transmissions, differentials and inner CV joints, so the only strongly effective torque improvement - a positive-displacement supercharger - will likely overburden the driveline.
