After some thought and research, you are absolutely correct. On a lubticated thread, less torque equals the same retention force.

Just for grins and giggles, if I recall correctly, Billman had an old head lying around and he decided to conduct an experiment to see how far he could go in torquing a spark plug into the head. He got as far as 65-70 ft/lbs or so if I remember accurately. It was the plug that failed and the head was not damaged or stripped.
