ill start off saying, ive owned a 2001 s2000 before. Sold it back in september and now another member on the forums owns it.

I have my EVO IX MR special edition for sale right now and once it sells, i will be buying another s2000.

i am debating the years. I know like 95% of the differences between every year, but need a few questions answered before i can really pick which to buy.

I will most likely go with an AP2 this time around, because i love the look of AP2 and the 2.2 liter engine makes more power.

I will be changing out the stock springs and dampers for coilovers, so the AP1 and AP2 suspension "rawness" wont really matter, since it will be stiff as hell when im done anyway.

People say the AP1 is more raw because of its 9k redline and stiffer suspension and lighter weight...

But the weight is only about 70lbs difference between a MY2000 and a MY2008...
And if im changing out the suspension, tuning it for NA and probably raising redline to around 8500 anyway...

Is there really any real reason to consider an AP1 at all?

And what about 04-05 vs 06+...

If i go 06+ will i encounter issues with HEAVY modding? Due to the airbag sensors, drive by wire, 06+ ECU, etc...

so for someone like me, who will mod quite heavily, what year will make most sense.

Also, i plan to stay NA, but i also plan to make the car very aggressive while doing so.

thanks for your time

matt

sorry for the sarcasm but this is prolly the 58th time this question has been asked. why don't you go test drive both, before you think about modding and changing the car. The 9k redline is worth it to go for an ap1, not to mention they're cheaper. I would of went that route if i didn't get a great deal on an ap2.

if your gonna modify the suspension and heavily mod it might as well save more money going with ap1 than ap2. thats what i would do. my $.02

I would buy an AP2 for the street but an AP1 for the track. Not because the AP1 is faster, but just because it has a bit more character. "Character" does not usually make a great street car, though.

If you plan to heavily mod the car, though, then none of that matters. Just buy the cheapest one you can find in good mechanical condition.

i have a MY07, and have modded quite a bit-just a few of them-sc,aem ems with harness for dbw(wich defeats the vsa anyway), if you plan on heavy modding save your self a headache and get a 04-05 with low miles, plus there is some interior changes that make aftermarket seats and roll cages a pain to get right with 06+

well my post is not the same as all the rest, because ive already owned an 01 AP1 before and ive driven multiple 04-05 AP2...

im basically asking if there is any reason for me to get an AP1? or an 06+ with the VSA and shit

i already know that out of the box, the AP2 is faster, but the AP1 is more raw and revs to 9k

when i say heavily modded, i mean high end coilovers, wide fenders and wheels/tires, intake, header, exhaust, other bolt ons, racing seats, harnesses, carbon hood, carbon trunk, carbon wing, gears, TB, maybe increase compression a bit...

someone said the AP1 for the track and AP2 for street.

If im putting racing coilovers in the AP2 and stiffer sway bars and getting the car tuned with I/H/E and redline to around 8600...other then 400 rpms, how would the AP1 be any better on a race track?

as for saving money...doesnt make a difference.

i just want the least amount of headaches when modding and best performance and most fun to drive and best looks.

if i get an AP1, i would already have the rear bumper i want and already have high redline, but..AP2 has nicer headlights and tails and slightly more powerful engine and better looks stock.

i dont plan to build the motor, just squeeze as much out of the car with bolt ons and weight reduction and tuning. The car will be a track car, but also a DD.

so knowing that, which year would make most sense.

so far i have this:

AP1 Pros: Better bumper for single exhaust, higher redline, sexier steering wheel, costs less, slightly more mod options.
AP1 Cons: Older car, crappy plastic window, less power than 2.2L, not as nice looking as AP2 stock, harder to find a good condition car, crap stereo, older tranny.

What does it matter what it looks like stock if you're going to modify the appearance?

Mike is the one who said he'd go for an AP2 for the street and an AP1 for the track, but if you look back at his post, you'll see that he did not say that his choice would be based on the AP1 being "better on a race track." What he said was that the AP1's had more "character." Only a small percentage of the general population has be background to even understand what that means, but it in no way equates to "better." "Character" is something that is usually found primarily in Euro cars, especially British and Italian cars, and it's rare in cars from Japan. Not everyone wants a car with character, but for others, it's an important part of any sporting vehicle. Character is the one place where Mazda missed the boat when they introduced the Miata back in 1990, and the S2000 is the first modern roadster from Japan to have any real character. The character that initially attracted buyers has been watered down over the years to broaden the cars market appeal, because as Mike pointed out, character isn't necessarily a good thing in a street car. He apparently likes the character of the AP1 (I know I do), but wouldn't care for it in a street car. So, he'd keep it on the track. Makes sense to me.

I like it on the street too, but that's just me.
