i've often seen blue tape on some cars when at a track or driving long distances. i am curious to know what is it and where can i get some?

 

Its painters tape... u can get it @ any tool place, home depot, osh any where

 

Painters tape, even electric tape would do.

It's mainly there in case of an accident - less glass all over the place!

 

And to prevent/reduce stone chips on the headlights. When you're following a car at 80-110 about 10 feet off their bumper you can get a lot of crap thrown up on the car.

 

I've seen it lining the wheel well. The painted surface of course. I guess if your sticky tires throw rocks then you'd want to keep 'em off the car.

 

Make sure you get the 3M blue painter's tape. I wouldn't recommend slapping just any old tape on a painted surface unless you're sure it'll come off clean and easy. The blue painter's tape is a special "low tack" tape that is supposed to come off clean up to 10 days after you put it on.

 

I use the 3m blue painter's tape a well.

I don't know about using electric tape though, the long heat in the sun could turn it into a mess.

 

Same here, 3M painters tape from home depot, I bought a 6-pack of 2" rolls. Works great. I started using it after going to single someone to pass as I was coming out of a corner with car in front of me; felt like my hand and arm were getting sand blasted. It does a great job of keeping all the black tire rubber marks of the front (from other cars), and off the area behind the front wheels (from my own tires). like other said, it also protects from little stones coming off the cars in front of you too.

Peeling the tape off takes less than 5min, scrubbing the rubber marks off is a lot harder.

 

So do you also use it for your car numbers? Or do you use racers' tape?

Well, in my dictionary it lists "Racer's Tape" as a synonym for "Duct Tape" so I wouldn't use THAT on paint I wanted to keep nice.

If your dictionary is different then YMMV.
