Default Brake Wear Indicator Squeek

EDIT: The noise has gotten more noticable. Esspecially around turns at lower speeds. I notice it coming from the passengers side rear wheel area. Depressing the brakes DOES NOT make the noise go away. Still wear indicators?

I have what I think is the brake wear indicator squeek. I notice it after the car has been driven for a while (say 20 highway miles) and then I need to use my brakes. However, I hear it most noticably when the car is out of gear. If I keep the car in gear I only hear it around 5-7mph, out of gear I hear it as high was 30-35mph.

Does this sound like the wear indicator or do I need to have my drive train checked out?

As a side note, I have brake pads coming in this week and they will be going on Saturday.

In past experiences with driving on the indicators, (not on my S2k) pressing on the brake pedal made the squeak go away.

It could be the indicators, or it could be the pads oscillating, thus causing them to vibrate, which then makes them squeal.

If you have pads coming, it dun't matter if the indicators are making the noise

Just make sure you follow the proper procedure from start to finish, and dun't forget to use the pad/shim lubricant, otherwise, whether or not the indicators are touching the rotor or not, it's gonna squeal.

When you replace the brake pads, have a look at their thickness. If the pads are worn even with the indicators, then you'll know the source of the squeak. If not, then you'll need to continue the investigation.

Sometimes pressing on the brake pedal will not make the sound go away.

Ok, I wasn't too worried as it is about 55k on the original brakes, the noise is just annoying as hell and I just wanted to make sure it didnt sound like my diff or something.

Have you looked at and measured your brake pad thickness yet?

can i do that without removing the caliper? I can see the outer pad. I can go measure it right now... I took a rough measurement with a ruler in the dark by flashlight thru the wheel and it looks like about 5mm give or take.

My only real concern is the fact that depressing the brakes doesnt really change anything about the noise.
