Default Breaking in an S2K.....Torture???

My friend has a Boxster ('99), and his salesman ENCOURAGED him to redline the car out of the showroom and all the way home.

He said, "These are handbuilt cars and do not need a break-in period. They are meant to be pushed and you should push the car immediately".

Anyway, I heard many S2K owners are waiting until 5,000 miles to hit 9,000+ RPMs.

I'm getting mine in a month, and I was just thinking to myself...

What horrible torture to drive around for a few months...not being able to redline it for 3 or 4 straight gears...or testing it against wannabee BMWs, Boxsters, even 300 ZXs....

What did you S2K owners do for 3000-5000 miles until your baby was properly broken-in?

I want some advice so I'll be prepared =)

Thanks guys.

You need to check your facts...you can red-line it after 600miles.
(about 1 - 1.5 weeks of owning it, or 1 good weekend)

Amartin, I only said it because that's what I've been reading.

Usually it's 3000 miles...but if you're saying 600...

That's such freakin' good news...

=)

I can just imagine me taking a turn at 25-30 mph in 1st gear...and at the exit of the turn...switching to 2nd and redlining it...

Torture!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

=)

I don't know where you have been reading, but it is indeed 600 miles. The 3000 to 6000 you are referring to are probably the oil change. Which is actually 3750miles.

/agree dsf.

I believe you are talking about OIL changes, not the number of miles until the first time you VTec. 600 or so miles and your in the clear from the factory to let-her-rip.

Per the Honda manuals:

Do not exceed 6,000RPM's for the first 6 hundred miles. Drive at varying RPMs to assure proper break in.

First oil change by the way is 3,750 or 6 months (whichever comes first) for "severe conditions". And 7,500 for normal conditions.

Do not switch to synthetic before 5,000 miles.......

Torture??? Torture is having to endure the break-in period on my second S2000. It will be well worth it though...only 100 miles to go.

By the time I drove my 2nd S2k home from the dealer in Irvine and back to Thunderhill, I was well over the 600 miles. Planned it that way!
