broke an axle! whoo!
so i started hearing a squeaking noise when the car was slowing to a stop at 30mph and under so i brought it in and Honda says the right rear axle is shot. didnt get major details on what caused it but i will tomorrow when i pick it up after its fixed. this is kind-of odd since i've only done about 3-5 hard launches on this car in my 3 years of ownership. however, when i did a carfax on my S, it said it was a fleet vehicle for the first 12k miles of its life, and then i bought it at 13k miles. someone probably leased/rented it and abused it
oh well; i just want my car back. this was basically just a rant.

A "shot" drive-shaft in dealer-speak could simply be translated into a CV joint in need of rebuild.
All it takes is a torn CV boot and some time with dirt in the joint and it'll eventually go. Generally, CV joints will make a lot of noise but are perfectly usable until they finally just break.
I've read on several occasions that S2000 drive shafts are a pit pricey. Your post is yet another example. I think the Honda dealership is the worst place to purchase that part (but I'm not sure of the best place). Generally drive shafts are swapped out for used driveshafts with rebuilt CV joints.
They should have been able to do that for far less.
