Buying S2000! ....but....
In some states I know Kansas and Missouri for sure, if you put gift on the title then the state will charge you taxes for the NADA/KBB value of the car. It's due to people trying to pay no taxes on a vehicle that they bought. It works if you get away with it, but it's still fraud. Some people just put a lower value than what they spend. As long as it's not $10 for a Ferrari, it usually works

Its one thing to fudge the number a bit to save a few $$$ on taxes, but a gift from unrealated parties will be questioned, I guarantee it.
Whatever you do...GET A BILL OF SALE and make sure you see the sellers driver's license to verify his name/signature/address. Why do this you ask?
Counterfeit titles and stolen cars....they are out there.
If you pay in cash and don't even know the sellers name...what do you think is going to happen when you try to title your stolen car with a fake title? If you want to be extra safe...ask to see the current vehicles registration at the time of sale and not just the title.
Yea. I know of someone this happened to!

gift is iffy...
i got away with it
Get all the information from the seller. Name, address, etc. Because even if given as a "gift" they can still go after you. Here in NJ, I gave my car to my sister and they still sent a letter to my sister to make sure she actually got it as a "gift". So, I had to signed the paper stating it is true that the car is a "gift". Not a big deal, because she's my sister, but you're SOL if they do the same to you and you can't find the seller. g'luck and hopefully everything goes well.
