Default C&D article on Dyno testing... Bring a Fan

Has anyone seen the article in C&D about dyno testing? it looks like small shops are inaccurate.

Yes. It was very interesting to see how much they could vary the results.

can anyone give a quick summary? I had my old 95 300zxTT dynoed on a dyno jet last Dec at a small but well known shop. Funny though, all 3 tries I got the almost the same results. The second try was with a fan, and that just boosted me up about 2 HP. Overall that day my max was 340rwhp and 370rwtq. That power was nice, but everytime you pushed the 300zxTT it felt like it would break and most likely would lol. Damn error codes, safetyboost, turbos going out. Liked the car but the reliabilty factor wasn't to great which is why I got my s2k

I may be a little off on this because I read it a few days ago but I will give it a shot. They tested a BMW with a blower(I believe) and could very the outcome by about 90 hp using the same dyno by not using a fan, using a fan and what not. The computer in modern cars can adjust output by how much air flow etc is going thru the radiater or somthing. Basically they are saying dyno redings can vary a ton with different conditions. I will try to find the article to give some specifics. Sorry I can't remember more.

The article was more about how newer cars (namely BMW's) are "outsmarting" the typical dyno rather than "small shops" not being able to give true readings. The test car was a Dinan M5 that gave readings of 334whp, 371whp, and 411whp. The first run had no fan w/ the hood closed, second run was using a shop fan, and the third run had a $7000 fan blowing at 75mph.
