Default A/C on when defogger selected

Ok, this seems like a pain in the neck to me. I know the A/C supposedly helps the windows defog, but I dont like the gas milage I get with the A/C on, and in winter months I usualy just leave the vents set to blow on the windows. Has anyone figuered out a way to make the ECU not automaticaly put the A/C on when the defogger is selected? I was thinking maybe removing a fuse or something, but was considering a toggle switch that when opened would not allow the A/C to activate. this way, the ECU can try to activate it, but the A/C won't get the signal. Anyone?

can't you just push the button and turn it off??

Believe it or not, just about all modern cars automatically turn on the A/C when you turn on the defogger.

So did you try and find a work-around using the ECU on all the cars you've owned??

No, you can't on the '02.

If the A/C is deactivated while the defroster is on, the water droplets on the ac core will be blown onto the windshield. it comes on to freeze the droplets.

lol. actually many 90's cars don't even tell you the A/C is on. My 93 civic for example... It's on when I turn it to defogger, but the button doesn't light up.

So maybe you've been forced and you don't even know it! lol

The AC automatically comes on to dehumidify the air that it's blowing on the cold windshield. If it didn't do this, the warm, humid air blown on the cold windshield would take much longer to clear. In addition, on cool, rainy days, the AC action keeps the humidity low.

Instead, just turn it to the floor/windshield setting. This doesn't automatically put the AC on, though you can manually switch it on if you like.

Follow-up.

If you turn on the windshield defroster setting firsst, and then switch to floor/windshield, the AC will stay on. From there, you can turn it off (at least in my '01). However, if you never go to the regular defroster setting, the AC won't come on automatically.

Well, on my '02 the AC is on in both of the positions that defog the windshield. It can't be turned off with the button. I agree that most of the time this is what you want, but not always. In my '99 Si the AC came on automatically but you could shut it off. I think the way the '02 S works is brain dead, but it's not a critical issue, I can live with it.
