Caffeine and the S2K
I guess this thread does not belong in the extremely serious category, but nonetheless I have read a few posts on here about S2K drivers stopping off on their drives to get a red bull or a cup of coffee.
While this may have nothing to do with the driving experience for them, I have noticed that after a couple cups of tea or coffee, I feel a need to get in my 02 Si and drive.
Coincidentally, the military gives mild doses of amphetamine to military jet pilots to keep them alert on their missions.
Given that the S2K is a driver's car, have you noticed that a dose of caffeine makes you more alert and focused as you put your car through its paces on pleasure drives?

Yes, I am hooked on Red Bull
Started a few years ago when riding bikes out in the canyons, nothing better then a can in the afternoon and hitting your stride in the twisties
Then leaving your buddies far behind..

We don't get Red Bull in Canada, so when I was down in Washington state, I stopped in Bellingham at a convenient store to pick up a couple of cans for myself and my passanger.... it definitely made the drive in the S2000 a bit more enjoyable after being sleep deprived for 2 days.
Does it REALLY work?
Before my fiance moved down to Houston(from Dallas) I used to make the drive to Dallas every weekend. After a days work, you sure do get tired driving the 4.5 hours. I've tried, red bull and jsut about everything else out there... they don't really work that well for me at all. The only thing that's worked are 3X or 4X shots of expresso from Starbucks.

It has been demonstrated that caffeine and small doses of drugs like amphetamines can increase hand/eye coordination, and spatial acuity (men have a real advantage in this regard, we have more dendrites in our brains). However, taking these substances in large amounts, or when very fatiugued can lead to paranoic delusions and risk-taking.
Amphetamines were discovered in the 1930's, as a byproduct of research into nasal decongestants. In fact, psuedoepinephrine is am amphetamine precursor, and is used in "speed" labs to make methamphetamine.
Ampehtamines became widely used after WWII, as both a "pep pill" and for appetite suppression, until its abuse potential was recognized. It is now largely used only for conditions such as narcolepsy.
It has been and continues to be used in the military as previously stated. Ampehtamines were widely used during Viet Nam, especially for nighttime search and destroy missions. There is some evidence that strung out GI's participated in war crimes during this time.

Here's what the Iron Butt Association "Worlds Toughest Riders" says about stimulants. These guys make a hobby out of long distance motorcycle riding.
It's this simple, drugs and other stimulants do not work! If you need No-Doze or other drugs to stay alert (the Iron Butt Association includes coffee and colas on this hot list), it's time to stop for the day and get some serious rest.
Some other wisdoms. Iron Butt may actually apply to long stints in the s2k.

When I's get's to fiddling I just take my ritalin!
I had a bit of a cold before a track day and so took some codeine/pseudoampetamine based cold and flu tabs.
I could barely keep it together to check the tyre pressure but I was an absolute demon on the track. Drove better than I ever have before.
I've been back to the same track and don't drive half as well 'normally aspirated' but I certainly won't be using cold and flu tabs to artificially enhance my performance in future.
Dexedrine on he other hand..... SAY NO TO DRUGS!
