Can someone explain fender rolling?!?!
Hello all, I just picked up a 2000 GPW with a hardtop two weeks ago. The car is lowered with Espelir ASD springs and factory 16" wheels. I am looking to buy a set of either 16 or 17 inch Volks. I have read up on all this fender rolling and camber stuff. Can someone explain this to me? If I went with the normal 17 volk, 17 x 7.5 and 17 x 9, would I have to have the fenders rolled and if so what type of shop in Northeast Ohio would do this? Thanks, any help to a new guy would be much appreciated!!!!
This will depends on your rims' offset and your tires
Safe offset w/o fender mods are +50 front and +63 rear.
For example, I have Front: 17x8 +45 and 235/40/17 tires and Rear: 17x9 +45 with and 255/40/17 tires and my front fenders are rolled and pulled, my rear fenders are rolled and tabs are relocated. My camber are around -2.5 to 3-.2 front/rear. My car is lowered to about 1 finger gap from fenders. The reason I needed to roll and pull my fenders are because my tires are not stretched, thus they would rub with out these mods.
Generally, lower offset means your wheels will stick further out. +45 offset in the real with some negative camber makes the wheel flushed with the fender. You can also get narrower tires which will help with the rubbing but IMO don't look all that great stretched.
You should go in the Gallery forum and look up how people are doing their stuff.
Check your local section for fender rolling service.

Well I guess my question would be if I keep my springs on and don't want to roll my fenders what would be the best size rim/tire/offset combo? There are some 16 inch Volk Ce28 for sale with a 48 and 49 offset. Would I be ok just putting those on? Or is there any "safe" 17 inch combo? Thanks!!

Hopefully this helps.

Do you see the lip of the fender? When you choose wider rims/tires, they'll eventually come in contact with that lip. You roll the lip up so it wont contact. when the suspension is compressed.

Look for the common safe +50 front +63 rear offsets for 17" volks. Its what I have, and you will not need to roll.
