Can't upgrade

I agree it's a struggle to top the S as an all-around sportscar, and I don't think it's really possible without spending big $$. When I went down that path I ended up with the Porsche Carrera S. I considered the Boxster S and Cayman S.
devs2k, there were a number of things that made me opt for the 911 instead of the boxster/cayman. Just a few examples:
Power: The Carrera S just has a lot more. How significant this is seems to be missed because folks always compare 0-60 times still and this masks how much faster cars like the Carrera are. Cars have gotten so fast across the board that differences in 0-60 time are relatively marginal ... but look at what happens when you compare 0-100 or 0-120 times on cars. When you do this, the added amount of performance the Carrera has becomes pretty apparent.
Handling/Feel: Subjectively the Carrera was a lot more involving and entertaining. The rear engine layout is something pretty unique and it feels much different than Front or Mid-Engine does. Also, I found the Carrera to be a bit more communicative than either the Boxster or Cayman.
Brakes: The binders on the 911 are simply astounding ... massively powerful, progressive, and they never seem to suffer an ounce of fade.
Looks: All three are beautiful cars, but the 911 remains a classic look that I just never get tired of.
Fit/finish/quality/features: All are pretty good, but the 911 does stand out on this factor.
Lots more reasons, but these are some of the big ones. However, all these are great cars. In fact the Boxster and Cayman are good enough that I would contend that if the extra amount of money for the 911 isn't virtually unnoticable to someone they should probably opt for the Boxster or Cayman.

or better yet, standing mile or 0-150 times..... then you see what a car truly is capable of.
I got an E46 M3 and loved it. Great car, but it's a different beast. Much heavier. I ended up going back to the S2000. My first was a MY00. My second was a MY04 with a SC.
Maybe you shouldn't upgrade.
Maybe it's time to expand.
Buy a 4 door car. Trust me, you will appreciate the S2000 once you have two cars and can go back and forth. Just get an 04 TL for like $20,000.

However, as previously mentioned, get a dedicated DD.

the 997.996, not so much.
For a daily driver, the 997 is hard to beat if you don't need 4 doors.
For a weekend car, I'd stick with a vert which as TimN said, kind of excludes the heavier 911 Cabrio.
And for a weekend car, I kind of like the feeling of fast at road-legal speeds... the refinement of these German cars is so phenomenal that you don't feel like you're going that fast until you hit triple digits....
