Pardon my ignorance, but what is this Squash? Is it an air freshner or is it some cologne everyone's sprinkling in the car. And what is that box with the Japanese letters on it

A couple tricks I learned from this site:

1) A couple of dryer sheets under the front seat. Works really well.

2) Your favorite cologne sprayed on the air filter when you change it. It doesn't last too long but it worked pretty well.
