Car & Driver answered your question. "The torquier 2.2-liter S2000 F20C1 engine that came in 2004 for the North American market, by the way, was also excellent but—more important—it wasn't as rev-happy."

Surprised no Porsche engine or the NSX C30a didn't make the list. Still a very good list of ground breaking engines though. Always nice to see the S holding it's own against the big boys.

This article is more click bait than fact. They said the F20C had titanium connecting rods and 3 phase cams. Also, I have a hard time believing that the F20C is better than all of Porsches flat 6's or Ferrari's engines.

However, I'll take it. The F20C should definitely be on the list.

The F20 engine was a noted marvel when it was released and why I wanted an AP1. The Porsche Flat 6 is a great engine, but as far as pushing the limits of engineering, the S2000 was in a class of its own. They are not saying its a better car, but what Honda accomplished with this engine had even Ferrari and Porsche scratching their heads.

And the article is pretty extensive with a WIDE range of engines throughout automotive history. The fact that the "obvious" super cars weren't the only ones chosen says something about the objectivity of piece.

BTW, early engines had titanium rods and some VTEC engines do have 3 phase cams.

For many years the F20c had the most hp per liter of any N/A engine. I believe Ferrari finally made more power per liter but Ferrari had to do it with a V8. I thinkl to this day the Honda S2000 has the most powerful N/A in line 4cl ever.

What puts it in perspective for me, in 1983 I bought a brand new Mustang GT with a 302 CID V8. The car made 175hp at the crank and that year it was one of the fastes production cars available. 17 years latter and you can buy a 122 CID or 2000 CC 4cl engine that makes 240hp at the crank

Now 15 years since the F20C came to be you can not buy another N/A 2000cc 4cl that can match its performance or even come close.

The engine is amazing, sounds amazing, amazingly afordable, and easy to maintain, Ferrari and Porsche can only do 2 of these
