If you are renting, my advice is to move as soon as possible. You are just in a bad neighborhood, and if you get rid of the people who are doing this, there are probably more just like them. I had the same problem once, and strangely enough, it wasn't a "low dollar" neighborhood by any means! The only effective solution was when I sold the house and moved out of that area. I actually moved to a "lower dolar" neighborhood, and had no problems thereafter.

You know, I can actually understand a little if someone steals something from me. Maybe they got laid off and have to feed their family or something. Vandalism has no possible excuse.

Check around and see if others in your neighborhood have had this problem. If they have, just get out.

Well, check your state and local laws before taking violent action. I live in Oklahoma. Here, due to the dolar amount of damage egging a car will do, our laws allow me to use deadly force to prevent the crime, or to prevent the escape of the criminals after the crime. So here, I could merely hide in the bushes with a shotgun and after the first egg was thrown, I could open fire -- and be within my rights. BUT not all states have similar laws. Believe it or not, some states do not allow me to protect my property by such means. Some states would have me arrested if I just beat up the persons I caught egging my car.

So check out the law in your area. It would be a real shame if you physically retaliated against these vandals, and then YOU were thrown in jail.

 

it's not that i keep letting them do it, i just don't catch them in the act so i can't take out my belt and lay an ass whooping. i definitely need to check the laws out before doing so though

Where might one obtain such information? It would be difficult to go through thousands of pages to find the exact answer, for those not familiar with the use of the law book's index.

 

You are correct. It is difficult to research the law, even for those trained in doing so, as I am. Were I a layman as to legal research, I would simply call my local State District Attorney's office, ask to speak to an assistant DA, lay out the facts, and ask what I can legally do to stop this crime. I would record the conversation, if possible. If not, I would at least get the name of the assistant DA with whom I spoke, and write it down -- along with his advice as to what I could and could not do. If I knew a local criminal defense attorney, I would also ask him/her the same question -- if I could do so without it costing me an arm and a leg.

Some more ideas:

Hide out with a taser or a couple cans of pepper spray so you can take them down long enough for the cops to get there.

Invite some friends over for the night and wait for them, when they appear chase them off with baseball bats and whatever else you have (without actually hurting them)

Take up a sniper position in the shrubs with a paintball or pellet gun and start sniping them in the neck/head/groin/car windows/etc.

Set them up by leaving out something you know they will steal. Hook it up to an alarm that will trigger the cameras or alert you to take action.

Get (or borrow) a couple of guard dogs and..

Hide out in another car and follow them home. Once you know where they live you have lots of options.

Hide out in the bushes completely naked, and when they show chase after them while throwing your own feces and screaming like a monkey. (For this one to work it must be video taped and posted here)

Contact your local PD and ask them what your options to catch or thwart these kids are (legally).
