I helped install one of these car lifts over the weekend in the garage of my brother's house:

It's called the Perfect Park 7000 and is manufactured by Lifts Unlimited. Here's a link to their web site:

http://www.liftsunlimited.com

It costs about $3,000.

If your garage ceiling is high enough to accommodate a car on the lift with a car parked underneath it but you don't have enough height to do this underneath your garage door when the garage door is open in the horizontal position, call your local Overhead Door Company dealer and have them extend the garage door vertical track so the horizontal track will be raised high enough to "hug" the ceiling. You will also need to add a mini top section to the garage door (which is not visible from the outside). If you have an electric garage door opener, this may also need to be raised to "hug" closer to the ceiling and its track may have to be extended so the motor unit is out of the way from hitting the car on the raised lift.

I'll admit it sounds like a hassle but most Overhead Door dealers are familiar with this procedure -- it has been done for years and is not that expensive. Here's a link to find your local Overhead Door dealer:

http://www.overheaddoor.com/locator/dealerlocator.cfm

If you have limited garage space and you consider the alternatives -- like putting an addition on your house -- the cost is actually quite reasonable.

Pick up a copy of Hemmings Motor News and you'll see lots of companies offer these lifts. My brother chose the Perfect Park 7000 on the recommendation of a friend who has owned several different brands over the years and likes the Perfect Park 7000 best. They are all priced around $3,000 give or take a few hundred dollars.

If you have kids an extra benefit is the car on the lift is out of the way from being scratched by bicycle handlebars, door dings from the car in the other bay, etc. It also becomes extremely easy to work on the car as it is now raised like at a mechanic's garage!

Not bad for $3k. What kind of clearance would you need to fit two sportscars in using it? Like say a 911 and an S2000.

I ask this because I am designing a new garage now and want to know how high to put the rafters.

Okay, cool. I think the plan is 9 ft anyways, but I'll put some more thought into this.

I've been contemplating this for a while. Here's another manufacturer:

http://www.doublepark.net

Spoke to these guys a few weeks ago and they had some demos available that they used at trade shows for 2700.00 if I rememeber correctly. I think theirs retails for 3400.00.

I think with their unit you need something like the total of the 2 cars plus 9" for clearance.

Wish I has one!

I'm going to do something similiar in my new home. I plan on
building a second level (kinda like a big shelf/loft)in the garage and then park the S2000 under it.

This should keep my 2 car garage useful until I build my shop and can just use the garage for car storage.
