Default Car modifications = waste of $ on resale?

Is every modification you do to your car just a waste of money for when you want to sell it? Say I add i/h/e/test pipe/vafc. And I sell the car in like 5 yrs, I will probably have to take it all off when I sell it and sell the car for its worth without it. Or, keep it on, and still sell it for the same price. Just never really moddified a car before and just wondering if its all just a waste of money when it comes to resale.

Yes, you'll get no value on resale... unless the person you are selling the car to sees value in all the mods.

Basically, yes. It's not a "waste" of money if you enjoy it. I love modding. I know it's not an investment, but it is something i like to do. As far as resale goes, mods don't add much to a price of a used car. A lot of people would rather buy a car that has never been modified. For instance...my current set-up on my car had $35k worth of parts. I sold (am almost done selling) the parts and only got $20k back. Hope this give you an idea of whether modding is right for you.

This is exactly why I keep my mods simple, cheap, and reversible. The car may have a higher resale value if returned to bone stock, even though my CAI I rigged up for $200 is a real winner. As mentioned above, at sale time, I'll just put the stock parts back on and sell the mod parts.

Thanks,
Richard

mods are a waste of $$.

I have not modded my car at all until now. I got gears and will get K&N intake and will get wheels.

it's a waste, however if I had sold my car and got something better like a 06 S2000 or Boxster or Elise I'd have spent even more.

I figure by spending $4K-$5k in mods it may make me keep the S2000 longer so I get more money out of it. In other words keep it 6+ years. And maybe I'll keep it longer. It's hard to justify selling the S2000 ever especially if you're only getting $20K or less for it mods or no mods.

But I may have been happier with a stock S2000 and $4k-$5k in my pocket and better option of when/if to sell it.

Also (I think) it's a wast to mod the car if you still owe money on the car. b/c you are paying interest on the car so in a sense the interest might as well be on the mods.

And then, there is the question of WHETHER you are going to ever sell your car. I know, this sounds like a silly statement, but my '01 is over four years old and still is virtually like new in all respects. And, as of yet, no manufacturer has come out with anything like the s2k, in my opinion. And considering the limited market for such a car, it just might not happen any time soon.

As I write this, I am watching the Barrett-Jackson collector's car auction, and I'm seeing things like '88 Corvettes going for 3X their price new. Kind of makes one think!

Thanks,
Richard

+1

Since a used S2000 is worth $20K and going down, it may be better for me to keep it.

For me to trade it in for an Elise (or a Boxster or a C6) these cars ~40K+ so it's like my car + another $20-$25K or Boxster S/Cayman S (my car + $35K-40K).

So I figure to spend just $5K on mods instead of $20K+++ for an upgrade car.

Plus my wheels can be re-sold easily. My gears and intake would be more trouble or impossible to re-sell. (it would cost me more to remove my gears so they in effect are permanent)

yup car modification is a waste on resale....but thats why I keep all my stock parts just in case one day I want to sell it......I'm pretty sure someone would want to swap oem differential for my 4.57 geared one as well as selling my s/c would be a snap....
