Default Car Selling Tips

Can anyone who has knowledge of selling a car privately(preferably in California) off any tips on the protocol?

My knowledge extends to getting the proper ID and a cashiers check, and handing over the keys, but that is all. Are there any other obligations on my part above and beyond the above?

Thanks

If someone is seriously interested in the car, I'd get like a $200 deposit from him until he can get you the full amount. I'd only take a bank certified check or cash, never a personal check. When he comes to pick up the car, sign over the title, the bill of sale (a copy for you as well) and the keys. That's pretty much it. Whatever you do, don't give out the title until you have the full sum of money.

Thanks Si

In my case, Honda holds the title. Is there anything I need to do at the DMV or is that done when I pay off the loan to Honda?

Do you think that I should verify the cashiers check?

I'd call and verify any bank or cashiers check. They can be fake. Also - if someone wants to pay you MORE than you want for the car & then wants cash back from you, that person is scamming you. His check will be fake & he will have your car & your cash.

SJ,

In the state of California the seller is required to have the vehicle smog certified.
