Default carfax is inaccurate

just to let you know I just traded in my s2000 which was basically hit by a truck with $9k damage and then repaired. No accident came up on carfax when I traded it in and the person buying it will have no idea it was involved in a major accident.

I actually told the dealer about the crash but he could find no evidence of it. Will he tell the new buyer.... I leave it to your imagination

On the flip side it makes me want to buy new as I see how incorect carfax can be

How long ago was it in an accident and was a police report filed? ... It takes awhile for accidents to be entered into the DMV system which I believe is what CarFax uses. I believe in some states, accident information is only updated 3 or 4 months after a crash.

But yes its true, CarFax isn't perfect. Actually, none of those services are ... but it still gives you more information about the car than you would have had otherwise, right?

You shouldn't take the CarFax as gospel, its not like a ticket to say the car is definitely going to be OK ... rather its just a way to find out more information on a car. You can many times find out if the car has a salvage title or was purchased as a commercial car almost immediately. Accident reports take longer though..

Yeah, carfax definitely isn't perfect.

OTOH, a knowledgable buyer will know to look for the VIN stickers which shouldn't be present on a repaired vehicle. Should be a dead give-away to the repair job.
