Carmax damaged my softtop
Over the weekend I went to carmax to get a quick appraisal on my S2000.

New tires - Bridgestone RE-11
Soft top replaced 12 months ago
Seat condition: Excellent. No crushed bolsters and no wrinkled leather
Location: Louisville, KY (40223)
Condition EXCELLENT
The appraisal comes back at $17,000 and he’s all excited about my car (or at least acts that way). The appraiser stated the current season is holding back the value. I told them I will think about it.
When I get back into my S2000, I see a cut in the soft top behind the passenger latch. I go back in and point out the cut. They take the blame and inform me they will call me on Monday to setup an appointment. That call comes on Monday and they want to have a patch applied to the cut. I inform them this is unacceptable and want the top replaced. They are hesitant to replace the top because they are aware of how much the soft top replacement is going to cost them. Later they offer me more on the trade in and up the value to $18,000.
My question is… what is the value of my S2000? Should I get more than $18,000? If I find a replacement vehicle (not at carmax) (I am looking at an Infiniti EX35) I will be trading in the S2000. If I don’t get a replacement, I will be keeping the S2000 and will go with a new top.
Thanks!
Dustin

Well it depends do you really want to get rid of the car? A quick KBB value shows Good Condition is $18,625 and excellent is $19,775. Very few cars truly fall into the excellent category and this is for private party sales which dealers usually never get close to. I would say if you aren't sure you want to get rid of the car have them replace the top, if you are definitely going to sell it soon look for $18,750-19,000 from them and see what they say.

I wouldn't take less then 20 for the car. Look online and you'll see similar cars at online pricing for 22-23k Which means its probably marked at 25k on the lot.
I gotta agree with rob-2, but have honda fix the softtop, not carmax. How in the hell did they manage to cut the top anyway?

I'd stick with KBB good condition especially because you want to get rid of the car.
Honestly though at 18k which is just 625 under KBB good value at private party, I'd take it.
The hassle of selling privately would not be worth 625 IMO
