Check gas cap
Getting the dash message “check gas cap” which seems to be a common Honda problem, that I have experienced on several Hondas. Presently have the issue on my 2007 S2000. I have tried the following with no permanent success.
1. Sprayed the inner side of the gas cap with silicone. This usually works on my Pilot, but no luck on S2000.
2. Press reset trip button and message goes away, but will return the next time I start the car.
Research has given me several other remedies which I have not tried as they reset everything. Disconnect battery & then reconnect. Hold trip reset & turn car off & on. Etc
Does anyone have a permanent solution that does not require a total reset of all data?
Thanks for any proven permanent solutions.

This same thing happened to me recently. The fix is to get a new OEM gas cap. However, for some reason it takes driving and turning the car off and on 3-5 times before the “check gas cap” light will reset and go off.
What GBR! wrote. The error is Check Fuel Cap, not gas cap.
I think the fuel cap is $15 at any Honda/Acura dealer -- they're all the same as far as I can tell. The gasket gets permanently smooshed and is available separately if you want to keep the original cap. Same basic thing for the oil fill cap where the gasket turns to granite after a few years, just buy a new one.

hmm...I wish the OEM Honda fuel cap was $15!
Funny story..on the S2000 I picked up last year, I didn't like the look and feel of the fuel cap that was on there; I was sure it was aftermarket as it looked smaller and shorter than the OEM cap from my old 01' that I sold around 10 years ago.
I ordered a new one from the dealership and took a look at it through the packaging and was SHOCKED that the one on my car now is the OEM cap?!
So it appears Honda has updated their fuel caps since I last ordered one so many years ago.
Just order the OEM, for at least maybe the new seal will work better than your old one or any aftermarket replacement cap.

I noticed, too, that the new OEM replacement cap seems slightly enhanced over the original cap that came with car new. I ordered mine from one of the major, reputable online Honda parts stores for around $35 plus shipping…but it really feels like it should be a $17 fuel cap.

There's nothing special or "S2000" about these fuel caps they're the same generic Honda fuel cap available over the counter at any Honda or Acura dealer. Take your cap in with you when shopping to compare if you have doubts. You may be surprised at the number of S2000 fans hiding in the service and parts department of the local Honda dealer.

I couldn't find the post that verified if CRV, Accord/Civic fuel caps were the same, so it looks like I paid their luxury pricing for the S2000 p/n
After i bought my S2000, i discoverd that the OEM Honda fuel cap does not close thight. It binds at the last turn. Thankfully, my euro S2000 does not give a message but nevertheless, it was annoying.
Reading through this forum, i discoverd that a batch of fuel filler tubes where not manufactured correctly, the "Thread" for the filler cup does not fit and is blamed to cause this problem.
I soleved the problem with a simple "Motorad" gas cap wich fits and close correctly. No probelms since years.
