Default Check Oil When?

When do you check oil...after driving a long time, or before first start of the morning?

I started checking the oil in my 04 2-3 times a week. But as it becomes apparent that it does not use oil, I have slipped to checking it on the weekends. I think I've gone two weeks between checks.

Currently at 4800 miles. Changed oil (regular Honda dino oil) at 1500 and 4300 miles. The thing hasn't used any at all that I can detect. Level in the morning is always right at the top of the top X.

1500 miles??? What's up with that, I thought they want you to wait like 5-7k miles before the first change?

The general concensus has been to check it at each fill up. I've checked mine every 1.5 to 2 tanks of fuel and so far, I've not used a drop that I can tell.

Either the MY04's are better about oil usage than the earlier models or I lucked into a good one. Either way, I'm thilled!

My opinion and practice.

Yes there are!

Honda lists two oil change intervals. One for "normal" usage and one for "hard" (?) usage. Normal is something like 7000 mile intervals and hard is 3750. The hard usage intervals come into play if you're doing a lot of short trips, driving in temperatures above a certain limit, pulling a trailer (not an issue for us), and probably a few other parameters.

I live in an area where I fall into the hard usage parameters on temperatures alone so I stick to the 3750 interval. Maybe it is overkill and I'm spending more money than I absolutely have to but it keeps me from handing the dealer an excuse give me grief about my maintenance habbits and it certainly doesn't hurt anything otherwise.

JMO!
