Default classic in twenty years?

I believe the S to be a semi sleeper car. People really can't appreciate it unless they drive one. One day the truth will prevail and car people will realize the S is a true classic sports car.

Classic sportscar in 20 years? yes. But in the same vein as an old Triumph, MG, Datsun Z cars, and the Honda S cars of yesteryear. Definitely not a high-end classic like an old Ferrari would command.

Appreciate? Never! The original Miata is a true classic, but it will never be worth more than a few pennies.

I'd have to disagree here Steve. Though the S isn't a super rare car by any means, it'll probably earn its ranks in the automotive books as having all the elements of a winning car. Not to mention it has lineage with the S500, S600 & S800 which are classics in their own right.

I'd echo medicalstudent's comments though in that they have their own "class" of sports cars that'll be recognized. Definitely not commanding the prices of a bugatti, ferrari or other but the original question being, would it be a classic. I'd say yes.
The miata was a perfect example of what today's classics will be. For the very reason it became a cult classic in the auto world in reviving the roadster scene. The S has similar elements as a purist car.

Just found this. Interesting list.

if they stop making them after 2006 i think the s may have a cult following that the rx7 now enjoys...the car will be known as one of those 'why oh why did they stop making these great cars?'.
the supra and rx7 command a high price still if they are not raced and are stock...not that the s is quite in the league of those cars the s has the potential to be one of the cars in the top 100 of all time.

Having seen several high mileage S's being sold/traded in recently, I would have to say that this car most likely will only be 'appreciated' by it's owners. Most uniformed people just see the 'miata' similarities and move on.

All I can say is that I'm lucky to have had the chance to own one. It's been driven 100+k fun filled miles and has made my 80 mile daily work commute fun for 4 years running.
