Cleared Headlights and Lamp Colors
I've been trying to research the required color of parking lights and turn signal lights here in the State of Connecticut. I read a section (#14) regarding lighting and it "appeared" that both parking and turn-signal lights could be clear - but I was only half right. Here's the response I got from the CT DMV, which I'm going to guess applies to most states as they use the Federal Standards:
-------------
In accordance with CGS Sec. 14-96e, turn signal lamps must comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108 which requires front turn signals to be amber or yellow. By both Federal regulation and CGS parking lamps may produce either a white or amber/yellow light.
Since most vehicles utilize the same lamp housing and bulb for both the turn signal and the parking lamp it is not normally a simple matter to incorporate a white parking lamp with an amber turn signal. If however, your vehicle does use separate bulbs for the parking and turn signal functions then you could use two different bulb colors even if they share the same lens. Amber turn signal bulbs are available which comply with all Federal and State of Connecticut requirements and these could be used with a clear lens. This would give you a white parking lamp and an amber turn signal in compliance with the applicable laws.
-------------
The bottom line is that clear parking lights ARE legal by Federal and Connecticut statute and turn-signal lights must be yellow/amber.
