Default close call

i was topping off the gas, the gas pump had only cut off once, and i only added maybe 40cent to make the bill even, next thing i know the gas had spilled out of the tip of the tank and there was just enough to close it. no one warned me to stop pumping gas after the first cutoff. phew. most other cars i've had i could add up to another dollar.

What exactly are the dangers other than gas spilling out and catching fire?

weird - usually after the cutoff, I'll bring it to the next 1/10th of a dollar. that much gas shouldn't cause an overfill, unless you are paying like 40cents a gallon

I've overfill more times with this car (almost every other fill)... I can't recall overfilling ever in my accords... that goes back 15 years.

I think its because the fill pipe is more horizontal because the car sits so low.

I think you'll find every car manual states that, and it has nothing to do with damaging the vehicle.

Prelupino, you have nothing to worry about.

I think rule of "not overfill" applies to any car (modern). we have vapor recovery system on our cars and also in gas station's pump. here's some articles..

Overfilling can also cause the check engine light to come on. It all has to do with the gasoline vapors being released into the environment. Overfilling will cause the emissions sensors to read the same thing as when you don't put the fuel cap on tightly.

stock sh is right, when you top off, 99% times you are not getting the gas. there is a secondary hose in the gas hose of the gas pumps, you are basically recirculating the gas back into the system .

If you overfill, you can saturate the vapor recovery filter in the car, effectively negating the function of the evaporative emissions control system, hence the check engine light and also the language in the manual. Now, I'm not sure the exact evap recovery system in our car, so I can't say if this common language actually applies to our car (like the warning label that says all kids should ride in the backseat).

My state does not have the evap revocery system built into the gas pump, but I have a hard time believing this system will actually pump liquid gasoline back into the store's tank. If you spill, it's gone, but if your putting liquid into the car's gas tank it seems to me it should stay there unless you overflow the internal evap system as above.
