Default Clutch rattle -- I need your advice.

When I turn off the ignition, sometimes even when I turn it on or rev it in neutral and the revs fall back when I get off the gas, I get this rattle. I think I've heard some of you talk about a clutch rattle that's covered under warranty.

I took my car in for service just before it hit 36,000 and the warranty expired to get some warranty stuff covered. I showed the service adviser at Pasadena Honda, someone I trust and have been dealing with for years, this rattle, which was then faint and intermittent. He said it was no problem.

Now, 2,000 miles later, it has become much louder, more regular, and increasingly irritating. I'm due to take my car in for 37,500 service Friday and am thinking of showing it to him again and saying "Hey, you said this was no problem, it's gotten much worse in a short time, and I think you should now treat it as a warrant item and fix it."

What do you think? Does anybody have any experience with this.?

Could be TSB -054. I had it done to my '01 and the rattle came back after 200 miles. I'm going to talk to my Honda dealer to see if they will put in a ACT clutch for me.

I recently had TSB54 done while they put in new 2/3 gear synchros. Although have have a faint rattle once in a while, what the TSB addressed was the extremely loud whine/rattle I always got during deceleration while in gear. The difference was night and day....

but I have noticed a faint rattle that comes and goes....but then again, I would never have noticed it without the TSB fix removing the deceleration whine.

I didn't get my question answered. Should I try to get it fixed under warranty since I first complained about the noise before the warranty expired?

Go for it! You have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Let me know how Honda of Pasadena works it out. I bought my my2000 from them. I don't know if I trust their service dept. If they treat you badly, try Santa Monica honda.

I just read TSB o54 in FAQ and is saib "engine or transmission buzzing when decelerating at 3,000 rpm." This is a rattle at idle/engine shutoff.

My car also exhibits this noise you are talking about, and I believe it is somehow related to the original clutch disc (springs) that TSB-0054 takes care of (try shutting down the car with the clutch depressed...much quieter, right?). My car does buzz between 3k-4kRPM in third gear (also faintly in 2nd & 4th within the same RPM range), but the noise isn't annoying enough for me to take the car in just yet.

BTW, TSBs and warranty issues are two separate things, aren't they? I thought TSBs are handled on a case-by-case basis & do NOT necessarily have to be performed during the warranty period. Am I mistaken?

Nope, same rattle at engine shutoff with clutch depressed.
